Wat zijn Ordinals?
Bitcoin Ordinals is een protocol dat in januari 2023 door Casey Rodarmor is ontwikkeld en NFT-achtige digitale artefacten rechtstreeks op de Bitcoin-blockchain mogelijk maakt. De Ordinal-theorie kent elk individueel satoshi (de kleinste eenheid van Bitcoin) een uniek nummer toe, zodat ze kunnen worden gevolgd, overgedragen en van data voorzien.
Belangrijkste innovatie
Ordinals benutten Bitcoin's Taproot-upgrade (november 2021) om willekeurige data, zoals afbeeldingen, tekst, HTML, audio en video, rechtstreeks in de witness data van Bitcoin-transacties in te schrijven. Elke inscription wordt permanent opgeslagen op de veiligste blockchain ter wereld.

Inscription-proces
Commit-transactie

Wat zijn Runes?
Runes is een protocol voor fungibele tokens op Bitcoin, gemaakt door Casey Rodarmor (dezelfde maker van Ordinals) en gelanceerd op April 20, 2024 - precies op het block van Bitcoin's 4e halvering. Runes gebruikt het UTXO-model van Bitcoin direct, waardoor het veel efficiënter is dan BRC-20.
Waarom Runes Anders is
Unlike BRC-20 which uses JSON inscriptions (creating junk UTXOs), Runes uses the OP_RETURN output and the UTXO model directly. Token balances are stored in UTXOs themselves, meaning transfers are native Bitcoin transactions. This is far more efficient, reduces blockchain bloat, and aligns with Bitcoin's existing architecture.
UTXO-Based

No Junk UTXOs

"Etching" creates a nieuw Rune with parameters (name, supply, divisibility). "Minting" distributes tokens. Open or closed minting modes are ondersteund.

Launched at block 840,000 (Bitcoin halving). The eerste Runes etched at the halving block became highly collectible, and fees spiked to over $78 per transactie.
