Recovery Methods by Scenario

Detailed step-by-step instructions for each recovery scenario.

Using Exchange Recovery Services

Major exchanges offer recovery services for wrong network deposits. Here's what to know.

What Exchanges Can Recover

  • ERC-20 tokens sent to BSC deposit address
  • BEP-20 tokens sent to ETH deposit address
  • Polygon tokens sent to ETH address
  • Any EVM chain to different EVM chain
  • Layer 2 tokens to mainnet addresses

What Exchanges Cannot Recover

  • Bitcoin sent to Ethereum addresses
  • Solana tokens sent to EVM chains
  • TRON tokens sent to non-TRON networks
  • Any cross-architecture transfers
  • Tokens sent to non-custodial exchange addresses

MetaMask Recovery Steps

Step-by-step guide to recover tokens using MetaMask wallet.

Step 1

Open MetaMask

Launch MetaMask extension or mobile app. Make sure you're logged in.

Step 2

Import Wallet (If Needed)

If you need to import the receiving wallet, click "Import Wallet" and enter your 12/24 word seed phrase.

Step 3

Switch Networks

Click the network dropdown at the top. Select the network where you SENT the tokens from (not where you intended to receive).

Step 4

Add Custom Network (If Needed)

If the network isn't listed, click "Add Network" and enter the RPC details. ChainList.org has all network configurations.

Step 5

Add Token Contract

Click "Import tokens" and enter the token contract address for that specific network. Find official addresses on CoinGecko.

Step 6

Verify Balance

Your tokens should now appear. You can transfer them normally or bridge to the correct network.

Hardware Wallet Recovery (Ledger/Trezor)

Recovery process for hardware wallet users is similar but requires connecting your device.

Ledger Recovery

  1. 1Connect Ledger to Ledger Live
  2. 2Go to Settings > Experimental features
  3. 3Enable "Developer mode" for custom networks
  4. 4Add the network app (e.g., BSC for BEP-20)
  5. 5Connect Ledger to MetaMask
  6. 6Switch MetaMask to the correct network
  7. 7Your tokens will be accessible via Ledger

Trezor Recovery

  1. 1Connect Trezor to Trezor Suite
  2. 2If network not supported natively, use MetaMask
  3. 3Go to MetaMask > Connect Hardware Wallet
  4. 4Select Trezor and authorize the connection
  5. 5Switch to the correct network in MetaMask
  6. 6Add the token contract address if needed
  7. 7Access and transfer your recovered tokens

Prevention Tips

The best recovery is never needing one. Follow these tips to avoid wrong network mistakes.

Always Verify Network

Before sending, confirm both your wallet and the destination address are on the same network. Check the network selector in your wallet.

Send Test Transaction

For large amounts, always send a small test transaction first. The small fee is worth the peace of mind.

Use Address Labels

Save frequently used addresses with clear labels including the network (e.g., "My Binance BSC USDT").

Check Token Contract

Verify the token contract address matches the official one for that specific network.

Read Exchange Instructions

Exchanges clearly state which network to use for deposits. Read the deposit page carefully.

Use Reputable Exchanges

Major exchanges like Binance offer recovery services. Smaller exchanges may not have this capability.
